developing sustainable
rare-earth-free permanent magnets
Why rare-earth-free permanent magnets?
Permanent magnets are essential components of our daily lives. They are used in a wide range of key technologies to achieve carbon neutrality, such as in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and a multitude of domestic appliances.
The European production of permanent magnets is currently fully dependent on the import of rare-earth materials, which are expensive, hard to recycle, and generally have a very high environmental impact.
PASSENGER (Pilot Action for Securing a Sustainable European Next Generation of Efficient RE-free Magnets) is developing an innovative way to produce permanent magnets without rare-earth materials and is piloting the new magnets in one of the most crucial fields for the European green economy: the electromobility sector.

PASSENGER combines in a unique manner the effort of 20 major centers to make real a sustainable
technological development of the complete value chain of the permanent magnet production in Europe.
The multiple dimensions of this project will make possible the industrial fabrication of novel permanent magnets based on resources widely available in Europe, will reinforce the electromobility sector and will increase awareness of citizens on the importance of a wise use of resources.
PASSENGER is travelling towards a greener, more sustainable and engaged Europe.
